Congratulations, Alan Griffith!

Griffith.jpgAlan Griffith, Construction Site Leader for Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity's Eastside Coalition, was named the 2009 Habitat Volunteer of the Year for the state of Ohio.  The award was presented to Alan at the 2010 HFH of Ohio statewide conference held in Columbus this month.  This award is given for significant contributions toward advancing the mission of Habitat for Humanity.  Nominations were received from affiliates throughout the state.

Alan is a role model for many volunteers in the Cincinnati area and a joy to learn from and work with.  He has contributed countless hours leading the construction of Habitat homes and, more recently, helping ready Cincinnati Habitat's new offices and ReStore in Bond Hill.

As a longtime Habitat volunteer of 16 years with his church, Alan has managed the construction of over 30 homes in the Cincinnati area.  He also helped to recruit eight other Lutheran churches to join the Eastside Coalition of Churches to help build three Habitat homes in 2010.

"It is volunteers like Alan that have made the dream of home ownership a reality for so many families here in Ohio and around the world," said Ryan Miller, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Ohio.  All of us here at Cincinnati Habitat are thankful for Alan's commitment and support in building homes and hope for families right here in Cincinnati.  Congratulations, Alan.  Well deserved!

Increasing Production through Rehabs

USB.jpgThe Union Savings Bank has donated a home at 1734 Holloway in Evanston to Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity for rehabbing.  As Cincinnati Habitat's focus shifts from only building new homes to a mix of new and rehabbed homes, we are grateful to the Union Savings Bank for this timely contribution.  It will allow Cincinnati Habitat to expand its annual building output while providing another Partner Family with decent, affordable housing.

We look forward to working closely with the Union Savings Bank and its employees, who have also expressed a desire to volunteer, helping to do the needed work on this donated property.  Their support of our mission is sincerely appreciated.

           Restore.jpg  Update

We were all excited by the upcoming Grand Opening of Cincinnati Habitat's first ReStore and, although the ReStore was unable to open to the public on March 20 due to circumstances beyond our control, we had a good day.  I'm reminded of the saying, "Man plans, and God smiles."

We set up a tent outside and fired up the grill.  If you stopped by to visit us on Saturday, you got a sneak preview of items in the store.  Right now we do not have a firm date, but stay tuned to Building Bits and our website because an opening date will be established soon.   Or, if you would like to be added to our email list of those who asked to be notified of the opening, click here.

Thanks to all who have donated or stopped by with the intention of shopping.  We look forward to seeing you very soon at the ReStore.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Flying Pig Small.jpgFlying Pig Marathon Volunteers:  For the third year in a row, Cincinnati Habitat will be participating in the Flying Pig Marathon on Sunday, May 2.  We need fluid stations volunteers to help us distribute water to thousands of thirsty marathon runners along the course.  It takes about 60 volunteers to help everything run smoothly and we need you!

If you are interested in volunteering, visit the Flying Pig site and click on "Signup with a Registered Group."  Next, selection 'Habitat for Humanity' and enter the password 'HFH'.  Participants can expect to volunteer from 7 am to approximately 12:30 pm.  All volunteers receive a Flying Pig t-shirt!

Cincinnati Habitat will receive a portion of the proceeds from the marathon registration for providing volunteers.  This is a great opportunity for families and friends to volunteer together and help Cincinnati Habitat raise funds in support of our housing ministry.

25th Anniversary Committee Volunteers:  2011 will mark Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity's 25th anniversary as an affiliate.  There will be much to celebrate as we look back over the years and watch the growth from the incorporation of the affiliate in January, 1986 to one that will build 16 houses in 2011 and be in the initial year of the operation of a ReStore.

If you would like to join a small team of volunteers that will lead the planning and implementation of some key events to mark our 25th anniversary, please contact our Business Manager (jcraig@cincinnati-habitat.org).

Volunteer Committee Members:  Volunteers are the heart of Habitat.  Volunteers need to be recruited, matched to their skills and interests, provided opportunities to make a worthwhile contribution, etc.  If you would be interested in helping to assure that Cincinnati Habitat continues to recruit good volunteers and encure those volunteers are having a valuable experience, consider becoming a Volunteer Committee member.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator (pdempster@cincinnati-habitat.org).
